This is a seven-character regulated poem of eight lines. The corpus has only the first six; the last two lines, "bān zhuī zhǐ xì chuí yáng àn, hé chù xī nán dài hǎo fēng", are added here from the common text. In the last line, some editions have "rèn" instead of "dài".

Background

Li Shangyin wrote many poems called "Untitled". The name means he could not or would not say what the poem was about or who it was for. This is the first of two "Untitled" poems. It shows a young woman sewing a bed curtain late at night, longing for a man she once saw only for a moment. No one knows for sure when it was written or for whom. Some readers think the poet uses her longing to hide his own frustration at failing to win an official post, but that is only one reading.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813 to about 858) was a great poet of the late Tang. His words are rich and beautiful, and his feelings are deep but hidden. He often uses old stories and never says everything outright, so his poems are lovely but hard to understand. His "Untitled" poems are his most famous. Most are about love and longing that cannot be spoken, and they shaped many later poets.

The mood意境

This poem is like a quiet story. Late at night a young woman is still sewing a curtain of thin, fragrant silk, layer on layer. Why can't she sleep? She is remembering the time they met. She hid her face behind a round fan, terribly shy. His carriage rumbled past, and they never spoke a word. Since then she has often sat alone by the lamp until its light grew dim. The days have passed, the pomegranate flowers have turned red, and still there is no news of him. At last she thinks his horse may be tied by a willow bank not far away. He is so close, yet she cannot see him. She can only hope a kind wind will carry her to him. The poem never uses the word love, but sewing, hiding behind a fan, sitting by the lamp and waiting for the wind all show her longing.
