The corpus has xiao gu (flutes and drums) in line two and lian hu yue (joins the moon) in line five. Most common editions have jia gu (reed pipes and drums) and qin hu yue (reaches up to the moon). The jia is a reed pipe of the north, often played in army camps.

Background

Jimen was in Youzhou in the Tang, near today's Beijing. It was a key post on the northeast frontier, often guarded by large armies. Zu Yong came here, climbed high and looked out. He saw snowfields, army flags, beacon fires and a mighty camp, and in his excitement he wrote this poem. The poem mentions deep snow, so it was likely winter. The year he came and why he came are no longer known.

The poet作者

Zu Yong came from Luoyang. His birth and death years are unknown. He passed the imperial exam in 724 and was a good friend of Wang Wei. His official career did not go well, and later he lived in retirement. Few of his poems survive; the best known is "Looking at the Last Snow on Mount Zhongnan". This poem is one of his rare frontier poems, and it is full of power.

The mood意境

The word "startled" in the first line is the eye of the whole poem. The moment the poet climbs high, the view stuns him. Then he tells us, one by one, what he sees. Drums thunder through the army camp. Snowfields shine cold for ten thousand li. At dawn, tall flags flutter in the wind. Beacon fires leap up as if to touch the moon. By the sea, clouds and mountains wrap around the city of Ji. The picture is huge and cold, grand and tense. Seeing all this, the poet's heart grows hot. Though he did not join the army when he was young, now he too wants to ask to go to war like the heroes of old. From being startled to asking for the long rope, a scholar's wish to serve his country catches fire.
