Background

This poem is usually dated to the autumn of 824. That year Liu Yuxi was moved from a post in Kuizhou to one in Hezhou, and on the way he passed Dongting Lake. The lake is in the north of today's Hunan Province and is one of China's largest freshwater lakes. In the lake stands a small hill called Junshan. On a moonlit autumn night the poet looked out across the lake and wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Liu Yuxi (772–842) was a Tang poet. Bai Juyi called him the Hero of Poetry. When he was young he joined a plan to reform the government. It failed, and he was sent away from the capital for more than twenty years. But he stayed cheerful and never gave in. He wrote many poems about mountains and rivers, and songs in the style of folk songs, such as the Bamboo Branch Songs. His short essay "Ode to My Humble Room" is also famous.

The mood意境

The poem is like a painting of Dongting Lake on a moonlit night. The first line shows the lake light and the moonlight melting into one, bright and soft. The second says there is no wind, so the lake is like a bronze mirror not yet polished: still, and a little hazy. Then the poet looks farther. Under the moon the whole lake gleams white, like a silver plate. The green hill in the middle is like a little green snail shell lying on the plate. Because the poet stands so far away, a huge lake becomes a plate and a hill becomes a tiny shell. This picture is fresh and charming. It shows us a quiet, bright, gentle Dongting Lake.
