Background

Jun was a monk from Shu who played the qin very well. Li Bai grew up in Shu, so hearing a man from his home region play felt especially warm. One view says the poem was written around 753, when Li Bai was traveling in Xuancheng, in today's Anhui. The poem shows an autumn evening, with the poet lost in the music.

The mood意境

Music is heard, and it is hard to put into words. Li Bai uses a few pictures. When the qin sounds, it is like the wind roaring through the pines of ten thousand valleys, big and powerful. As he listens, his heart feels washed clean by flowing water. When the music stops, the echo stays and blends with the autumn temple bells, drifting far away. The last two lines say nothing about the music, only about the sky. When the poet comes back to himself, he finds the green hills have gone dark and the autumn clouds are dimming layer by layer. He was so lost in the music that he forgot the time. That is what good music does.
