Background

Huang Chao led a great uprising at the end of the Tang dynasty. This poem is usually thought to date from before the uprising. Another view says he wrote it as a boy. Chrysanthemums bloom in autumn. It is cold, butterflies do not come, and no one enjoys them. Looking at the flowers, Huang Chao thought about how they were treated and wrote this poem. Exactly when is no longer known.

The poet作者

Huang Chao (died 884) led a peasant uprising at the end of the Tang. He came from a family of salt traders. He studied but failed the jinshi exam. Around 875 he rose in revolt. In 880 he took Chang'an and declared himself emperor. In 884 he was defeated and died. Few of his poems survive, but all are bold and strong.

The mood意境

The first two lines show how lonely the chrysanthemums are. The autumn wind blows and the yard is full of flowers, but it is so cold that not even butterflies come. The flowers are lovely, yet no one enjoys them. It seems unfair. Then the last two lines turn bold. If some day I become the god of spring, I will let the chrysanthemums bloom in spring with the peach blossoms! Most poets praise the chrysanthemum for braving the cold. Huang Chao wants to change the rules so it can enjoy spring's warmth too. There is pity for the flowers here, and a great wish to change the world. The tone is proud and full of power.
