The lyric has a long original heading: "Coming from east of the Mian River, I reached Jinling on New Year's Day of the year Dingwei, and wrote this on the river after a dream." The corpus gives only the tune name, so the first line is used as the title, as is common.

Background

On New Year's Day in 1187, Jiang Kui was traveling east by boat from Hanyang to Huzhou. As he passed Jinling, today's Nanjing, he dreamed of the woman he loved, and wrote this lyric when he woke. Scholars believe she was a singer he had met in Hefei when he was younger. He wrote many lyrics remembering her throughout his life. Her name and story were never recorded.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155 to about 1221), also called Yaozhang and known as the Daoist of White Stone, was a Southern Song lyric poet and a fine musician who wrote his own tunes. He never held office. He lived on the help of friends and moved from place to place. His lyrics are cool, clear and airy, like moonlight. The scholar Wang Guowei wrote that of all Jiang Kui's lyrics, the lines he loved most were the last two of this one.

The mood意境

The first stanza is the dream. His beloved, light as a swallow and soft as an oriole, appears clearly before him. She even scolds him: the nights are so long, how could you know? Spring has barely come, and I am soaked in longing. The second stanza thinks of her deep love. Her letters and the clothes she sewed are still with him. Her soul has even left her body to follow him all this way. The last two lines are the loveliest. The bright moon over Huainan turns a thousand hills cold. Her soul goes home alone in the dark, with no one to look after it. It is her loneliness, and also the poet's own ache for her.
