Background

This ci shows two lovers parting by the water. The first stanza is the moment of parting. They look at each other with tears in their eyes. The boat is about to leave, and all the willow strands on the bank cannot hold it back. The second stanza comes after the boat is gone. The one left behind watches the setting sun and the mist, so sad that they do not know how to get through the night. The ci does not say who is parting from whom, and we no longer know when it was written. The floating threads, willow fluff and misty willows show that it is spring.

He was poor when young and did not become an official until he was about sixty. His ci are fresh and natural, often using plain words for deep feelings. The last two lines of this ci sound just like everyday talk.

The mood意境

The first two lines give two pictures. Love is like a floating thread, thin and long, impossible to break. People are like willow fluff: the wind blows and each drifts off, with no say in it. Then the two look at each other with tears and cannot speak. The willows on the bank have ten thousand strands that look like ropes to tie a boat, yet not one can hold it, so even the willows seem helpless. In the second stanza the scene grows farther and fainter. Geese cross the setting sun, and the grass fades into the mist, just like the person going away. The last two lines are the most moving. Tomorrow I may manage not to think of you, but how will I get through tonight? The sorrow is said so plainly and truly, as if someone were speaking right beside you.
