Background

Taicheng was in Jinling, today's Nanjing in Jiangsu. The emperors of the Six Dynasties lived there, and it was once full of life. But those dynasties fell one after another, and by the Tang, Taicheng was only a lonely ruin. Wei Zhuang lived in the late Tang, when the Tang itself was falling apart. He came to Jinling, saw the site of Taicheng, and wrote this poem. It is usually thought to date from his years of travel in the south, but the exact year is not known.

The poet作者

Wei Zhuang (about 836–910) was a late Tang poet and writer of song lyrics. He lived through the Huang Chao rebellion and wrote a long poem, "Lament of the Lady of Qin", about the suffering of ordinary people in the war. He also lived in the south for many years. Later he went to Sichuan and became chief minister of the state of Former Shu. He had watched a dynasty decline with his own eyes, so the rise and fall of dynasties moved him deeply.

The mood意境

This poem is about how places stay while people and times change. The first line is a picture of spring rain: fine rain on the river, lush green grass, beautiful and a little hazy. The second line jumps to the Six Dynasties. All that splendor has passed like a dream, yet the birds still sing as if nothing had happened. The last two lines are the best. The poet calls the willows heartless, because no matter how dynasties change, every spring they turn green again and veil the long embankment like mist. Really, it is not that the willows have no heart. It is that the poet's own heart is so sad. Looking at the fall of the Six Dynasties, he is also worried about the Tang in front of him.
