How to read it读音

重chóng: Here the character means 'again', so it is read chóng, not zhòng.重：这里是“再一次”的意思，读 chóng，不读 zhòng。

Background创作背景

This lyric is usually dated to 1174. Xin Qiji was then an official in Jiankang, today's Nanjing. Much of northern China was held by the Jin state. He longed to win it back but was not given real power. On Mid-Autumn night he watched the moon with his friend Lü Shuqian and wrote this for him. The line about chopping down the cassia tree borrows an idea from Du Fu, who wrote that cutting the moon's cassia would make its light brighter.

这首词一般认为写于宋孝宗淳熙元年（1174年）。那时辛弃疾在建康（今江苏南京）做官。北方的大片土地被金国占着，他一心想收复，却得不到重用。中秋夜，他和朋友吕叔潜一起赏月，写下这首词送给朋友。“斫去桂婆娑”一句，借用了杜甫诗里“斫却月中桂，清光应更多”的意思。

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207) was a great Southern Song lyric poet. As a young man he raised troops in the north to fight the Jin, then came south to join the Song. All his life he hoped to win back the north, but he was often pushed aside. His lyrics are bold and strong, and he is named together with Su Shi. The wild fancy in this lyric also hides his wish to serve the country.

辛弃疾（1140—1207），号稼轩，南宋大词人。他年轻时在北方起兵抗金，后来南归宋朝。他一生想收复中原，却常常被冷落。他的词豪放有力，和苏轼并称“苏辛”。这首词里的浪漫想象，也藏着他的报国心。

The mood意境

The first half paints the moon. It is like golden waves, and like a mirror just polished, round and bright. Then the poet raises his cup and asks Chang'e: white hair is bullying me, what can I do? The mood turns from beauty to worry. He sighs that he is growing old before his great task is done. The second half is full of wild imagination. He wants to ride the wind into the sky, look down on the land from far above, and chop down the cassia tree on the moon so the light shines brighter. The tree that blocks the light is like the people at court who stood in the way of fighting the Jin. Cut it down, and the world below grows brighter. The lyric reads like a fairy tale, but behind it beats a heart that longs to serve the country.
