Background

In the winter of 1191, Jiang Kui travelled through the snow to Stone Lake near Suzhou to visit the great poet Fan Chengda, who had retired there, and stayed over a month. Fan asked him for new lyrics with new tunes, so he wrote two lyrics about plum blossom, "An Xiang" and "Shu Ying". Fan loved them and had singers learn them. The tune names come from a famous plum poem by Lin Bu: sparse shadows (shu ying) slanting over clear water, a hidden scent (an xiang) drifting at moonlit dusk. Some readers think the lyric also grieves for the Northern Song palace ladies carried off by the Jin.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155–about 1221), known as the Daoist of White Stone, was a Southern Song lyric poet and a composer. He never held office and lived with help from friends. He knew music well and wrote his own tunes; "An Xiang" and "Shu Ying" are both his own. His lyrics are cool and elegant, full of allusions, and often mix a thing seen with longing for a person and grief for the times.

The mood意境

This lyric is about plum blossom, yet it hardly describes the flower. Instead it turns the plum into one woman after another. First a beauty leaning silently on bamboo by a fence at dusk. Then Wang Zhaojun, married off far to the north, whose spirit comes home on a moonlit night and becomes the plum. Then Princess Shouyang, with a plum flower on her forehead. These women are all lovely, lonely and a little sad, and so the plum takes on a human heart. In the second half the poet pleads: do not be careless like the spring wind; treasure the blossom early. Otherwise its petals will float away, the flute will sound sad, and you will see the plum only in a painting. The many old stories make the lyric feel like thin mist: cool, quiet and softly regretful.
