Background

This poem is usually dated to the spring of 760. At the end of the year before, Du Fu had come to Chengdu to escape the war and famine caused by the An Lushan Rebellion, and settled there for a while. Outside the city stood the Wuhou Temple, built in memory of Zhuge Liang. Du Fu visited it, thought about how Zhuge Liang had served Liu Bei and his son Liu Shan, and wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, called the Sage of Poetry. He always cared about his country and its people, and longed for a capable person to end the war. He deeply admired Zhuge Liang and wrote several poems about him. In this poem there is praise for Zhuge Liang, and also a sigh for himself, who had no way to serve his country.

The mood意境

The poem opens like a question and answer. Where is the temple? In the cypress woods outside the city. Lines three and four show spring at the temple: green grass, a bird singing sweetly. But the words zì (all by itself) and kōng (in vain) make it feel lonely. The great minister is gone, and no one is there to enjoy the view. Lines five and six sum up Zhuge Liang's whole life in fourteen characters. Liu Bei visited him three times, and he served two rulers with all his heart. The last two lines touch people most. He led his army north, but died of illness before he could win. For more than a thousand years, people with big dreams that never came true have wept when they read these lines.
