The corpus text (from the Complete Song Lyrics) has 'cicadas roosting' in line 2 and 'not like last year' in the last line. Most editions read today have 'cicadas shrilling' and 'not like my young days', and this page follows them. Also, in line 3 some editions have 'beyond the birds' instead of 'beyond the isle'.

Background

We do not know exactly when this lyric was written. From the words, it is an autumn evening, and the writer, no longer young, rides along an old road in Chang'an. It is usually thought to be from Liu Yong's later years. When he was young he lived a lively life in the capital. Later he travelled from place to place. Looking back in old age, he felt that everything had changed, and he wrote this lyric.

The poet作者

Liu Yong (around 987–around 1053), first named Sanbian, was a ci writer of the Northern Song. As a young man he lived in the capital among singers and musicians and wrote many new songs that everyone sang. People said that wherever there was a well to drink from, someone was singing Liu Yong's lyrics. But he failed the civil exams many times and got only a small post late in life, so he never did well in his career.

The mood意境

The first half is a picture of autumn: an old road, a slow horse, tall willows, noisy cicadas, the setting sun, the autumn wind and the plain stretching to the sky. The horse walks slowly because the rider has no spirit left. The cicadas shrill in a jumble, like the jumble in his heart. The world is huge, and he is small and alone. The second half turns inward. The past is like clouds that have drifted off and cannot be found. The old promise is lost too. His love of fun has faded and his drinking friends are gone. The last line, 'nothing is like my young days', is a soft sigh that says everything about growing old. The tune is called 'Roaming in Youth', yet the lyric is about youth being gone, which makes it even sadder.
