Our source text writes the third line with shuǐ jīng in an old spelling. It is the old way of writing "crystal". Most current editions and textbooks use the modern spelling. The meaning is the same.

Background

No one knows for sure when or where this poem was written. Gao Pian was a general of the late Tang. He spent most of his life leading armies, but he also loved to write poems. The "mountain pavilion" in the title is a pavilion in the hills, or a garden built at the foot of a hill. On a long summer day the poet looked at the trees, buildings, pond and flowers of the garden, and wrote this cool little poem.

The poet作者

Gao Pian (821–887) was a famous general of the late Tang. He came from a family of soldiers and guarded regions such as Xichuan and Huainan. He once drove back an attack by the kingdom of Nanzhao. Though he was a soldier, he loved poetry, and a whole chapter of his poems survives in the Complete Tang Poems. In old age he became obsessed with seeking immortality, and in the end he was killed by his own officers.

The mood意境

This poem is about summer, yet it makes us feel cool. The first line is about green: the thick shade keeps the sun out. The second is about reflection: the buildings appear upside down in the pond, as if there were a second building in the water. The third is about movement: the curtain sways, and only then does the poet notice a breeze. Wind cannot be seen, so the poet shows it through the swaying curtain. The last line is about scent: the breeze carries the smell of roses all over the courtyard. With his eyes, his skin and his nose, the poet gives a quiet, lazy summer day its colors, reflections, breeze and fragrance.
