Background

This is the first of Lu Lun's six "Replying to Minister Zhang's Frontier Songs". Replying here means writing a poem in answer to someone else's. Minister was a high official title, and this Minister Zhang may have been Zhang Yanshang. This first poem opens the set with a general giving orders and the whole army answering. The arrow name Golden Pugu and the banner name Maohu both come from the old history Zuo Zhuan.

The poet作者

Lu Lun was a Tang poet, one of the Ten Talents of the Dali era. His exact dates are not known; he lived in the second half of the eighth century. He served in the army and knew camp life well. His set of six Frontier Songs shows the general's power and the soldiers' courage, and several of them are in school textbooks.

The mood意境

The first two lines show the gear. The arrows are famous arrows with vulture feathers at the end. The flags are war banners with embroidered swallow-tail streamers. Just from the arrows and flags, we can tell how fine this army is and how mighty its general. The third line points the camera at the general: he stands alone up high and gives a new order. The fourth line pulls the camera far back: soldiers in a thousand camps shout their answer together, like thunder. One man and ten thousand, stillness and roar, a powerful contrast. Picture the flags snapping in the wind and the shout echoing through the valleys.
