The corpus writes chén chén in an old character form; it is written here in the usual modern form. In line six some editions use a different character for méi (charming instead of eyebrows); the meaning is about the same, and this text follows the corpus.

Background

In this lyric the poet travels again along a road he once took. He remembers someone he loved, whom he met here and later had to leave. The autumn rain has just passed and the leaves are falling. He finds the place where he once wrote a poem on the wall, but she is nowhere to be seen. No record says which year, which place, or who she was; we can only feel his mood through the words.

The poet作者

Yuan Quhua, also called Xuanqing, came from Fengxin in today's Jiangxi. His dates of birth and death are unknown. He passed the highest imperial exam in 1145 and served as head of counties such as Shanhua and Shishou. His lyrics often tell of the hardship of travelling far from home and the longing of parting, in fresh, natural words.

The mood意境

This lyric is like a visit to an old place. The first stanza paints the scene: fields after rain, dead leaves still floating after the wind has stopped, the sun hanging in the trees, and far hills dark and pale like a beauty's painted brows. He walks the road he once came by. The flowers are still half open, but everything has changed. Only the stream, like an old friend, greets him the same as ever. In the second stanza he gets off his horse to find the wall where he once wrote a poem, tired and sad. He thinks of old love stories: the stolen perfume, the broken mirror, the face among the peach blossoms. He asks himself: even if we kept our tokens, when I come again, will she still be here? He dares not answer, and only says that sometimes he goes back to that little room in his dreams. The places stay the same but the person is gone, and that feeling touches readers most.
