Background创作背景

This is a ci about longing. It is usually read in the voice of a woman missing her love far away: the things he left are still here, but his heart has changed and his letters grow fewer. Some think Yan Jidao used a woman's voice to show his own longing for a past love. The year it was written is not known.

这是一首写相思的词，一般读作一位女子思念远方的心上人：东西还在，人却变了心，信越来越少。也有人认为是晏几道借女子的口吻写自己对旧日恋人的怀念。这首词写于哪一年，已经说不清了。

The poet作者

Yan Jidao (about 1038 to about 1110), also called Xiaoshan, was the youngest son of the chief minister Yan Shu. Father and son are known together as "the two Yans". His family later fell on hard times. He was proud and would not flatter powerful people, so he never got far in office. He was best at writing about longing and memories, in lines that are sincere and sad.

晏几道（约1038—约1110），字叔原，号小山，是宰相晏殊的小儿子，人们把父子俩并称“二晏”。他家后来败落，他自己性格清高，不愿巴结权贵，一生不得志。他最会写相思和怀旧，词句真挚又伤感。

The mood意境

The sorrow in this ci grows layer by layer. First the things are set against the person: the scent and powder are as they were, but his feelings have faded. Then the letters: in spring a few lines still came, and by autumn even fewer. The second half is night. The phoenix quilt is cold, the duck pillow is lonely, and only wine can ease her heart. The last two lines hurt the most. She could at least meet him in a dream, even if waking left her empty. But now not even the dream will come. From letters to fewer letters, from dreams to no dreams at all, her hope is taken away bit by bit. The words are simple, yet they show the pain of waiting completely.
