Background

Wugong Terrace is in today's Yangzhou, Jiangsu. Wu Mingche, a general of the Chen dynasty in the Southern Dynasties, once fought here, and a temple was later built on the terrace. One autumn Liu Changqing climbed it and looked far out. He saw a lonely temple, old army walls and empty woods. He thought of the rise and fall of the Southern Dynasties, and of his own home. The poem is usually placed in the years after the An Lushan Rebellion, when he wandered in the lands south of the Yangtze and the Huai, but the exact year is not known.

The poet作者

Liu Changqing (about 726 to about 790) was a Tang poet who excelled at five-character verse. He called himself the Great Wall of five-character poetry, meaning his poems were as strong as the Great Wall. He was demoted twice and spent much of his life far from home, so his poems often show cold, quiet scenes like autumn, sunset and distant hills, touched with a gentle sadness.

The mood意境

This is a poem of climbing high and thinking of the past. It opens in autumn: the leaves have fallen and the poet misses home. The middle four lines show what he sees from afar. The temple is quiet and few people come. Across the river the peaks hide in the clouds. The setting sun shines on army walls left from old battles. The temple chime echoes through the empty woods. Every picture is still, even a little cold, as if the clash of swords long ago has been blown away by time. The last two lines say what is on his mind. The Southern Dynasties fell one after another, and their people and deeds are gone. Only the Yangtze keeps flowing. The river never changes while the human world keeps changing, and that fills him with sorrow.
