Background创作背景

This is one of Wu Wenying's lyrics in memory of a lost love. It is generally thought that as a young man he had a love affair in Hangzhou. Later he and the woman parted and never met again, and he wrote many lyrics about her. In this one he comes back to the ferry where they parted, ten years later. Alone in a pavilion he gazes into the distance and recalls their time together. The exact year it was written is no longer known.

这是吴文英怀念旧日恋人的一首词。一般认为，他年轻时在杭州有过一段恋情，后来和那位女子分别，再也没有见面，他为此写了很多词。这首词里，他重新来到当年分别的渡口，已经过了十年。他独自登亭远望，回想起两人在一起时的情景。具体写于哪一年，已经说不清。

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 to about 1260), courtesy name Junte, also called Mengchuang, came from Siming, today's Ningbo in Zhejiang. He was a Southern Song ci poet. He never held high office and often lived as a guest of officials around Suzhou and Hangzhou. His lyrics use rich words and jump from image to image like a dream, so they are not easy to follow. He wrote many lyrics in memory of a lost love.

吴文英（约1200—约1260），字君特，号梦窗，四明（今浙江宁波）人，南宋词人。他一辈子没有做大官，常在苏州、杭州一带给官员做门客。他的词用字华丽，意思常常跳来跳去，像梦一样，不太好懂。他写了很多怀念旧日爱人的词。

The mood意境

The first stanza shows the present. He has come back to the Xiling ferry. Ten years have passed, and every ebbing tide still makes him sad. He pulls at the old willow, watches the gulls gather and part, and leans alone in the pavilion. A cool wind rises, distant sails grow smaller, and green hills lie across the dusk. No one is with him; only the river flowers look with him into the autumn water, each seeing how worn the other is. The second stanza suddenly jumps back to the past. In a hall where the candles burned low, she saw her guests out and turned back to look at him. Her skin was like ice, her fingers like tender scallions dipped in snow, and she once cut a melon for him. These details are so clear, as if it were yesterday. Then in a blink we are back in the present: the wine cup is not yet washed, but she is far away. He cannot see her even in dreams, and is left with only tears. At the end, the autumn night slips by to the sound of crickets and thin rain. The warm past and the cold present keep taking turns, like a person in memory, now awake and now dreaming.
