The commonly taught text has "shì wèn xián chóu dōu jǐ xǔ" in line nine. The corpus text has "ruò wèn xián qíng dōu jǐ xǔ". Both mean about the same, "if you ask how much idle sorrow I have". Textbooks and most anthologies use the first.

Background

In his later years He Zhu lived in Suzhou and had a home near Hengtang outside the city. This lyric is usually thought to come from that time. In it, a beautiful woman passes near Hengtang but does not come his way. He can only watch her go, and an endless sorrow rises in him. Some readers think the "beauty" is a symbol: by writing of a woman he cannot reach, he is writing about his own talent and hopes that were never put to use.

The poet作者

He Zhu (1052–1125), courtesy name Fanghui, came from Weizhou in today's Henan. He was a lyric poet of the Northern Song. All his life he held only small posts and never got ahead. Some of his lyrics are bold, others tender and delicate. The ending of this lyric, "the rain when the plums turn yellow", was so admired that people nicknamed him "Plum He".

The mood意境

The first stanza is about a missed chance. The lady walks lightly by without coming over, and he can only watch her back from afar. He cannot help wondering: who will share her lovely years? What fine courtyard does she live in? But "only spring knows", and he never will. The second stanza is about sorrow. At dusk the clouds drift slowly, and he writes sad lines. The best part is the ending. Sorrow cannot be seen or touched, yet he compares it to three things in a row: grass covering the plain, willow fluff filling the town, and plum rain that never stops. The grass is endless, the fluff is tangled, the rain goes on and on, and so is his sorrow. Together the three pictures make a misty painting of the south in late spring and early summer.
