The usual text writes xī, creek, in its common form. The source text uses an old variant form of the same character, so we follow the usual text.

Background

The poem shows what the poet saw as he followed Green Creek into the Huanghua River valley. The Huanghua River is around today's Feng County in Shaanxi, and Green Creek is a stream flowing there. There is no reliable record of when the poem was written or why the poet passed this way. Moved by the clear stream, and thinking of his own calm heart, he began to dream of living as a hermit and fishing.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (about 701 to 761) was a Tang poet, and also a painter and musician. He was a Buddhist and is called the Buddha of Poetry. His poems of hills and rivers are calm and fresh, and Su Shi said his poems hold paintings inside them. In later life he lived quietly at Wangchuan and often wrote about his peaceful heart. This poem joins the stillness of nature with the stillness of a person's heart, which is very much his style.

The mood意境

This poem is like a walk beside a little stream. At the start the creek twists through ten thousand bends, yet the road is not even a hundred miles. We picture the winding hill path and the lively water. The middle four lines are the most beautiful. Among the jumbled rocks the water roars; inside the pine woods its color suddenly grows still. One is movement, one is stillness; one is sound, one is color. Then water plants float on the surface and the clear water mirrors the reeds, like a fine, detailed painting. At the end the poet says his heart has always been at peace, just like this stream. So he wants to stay on the big rock and fish for the rest of his life. The man and the stream seem to become one, and after reading it our own hearts grow quiet too.
