Background

This ci is about the sadness of seeing spring end. Spring is almost over, and the poet does not want it to go. He looks for it everywhere, as if it were a friend, asking people and then asking a bird. We do not know exactly when or where it was written. The poem never shows fallen flowers directly. Instead it treats spring as a person who can walk away and hide, which is an unusual and fresh idea.

The mood意境

This ci is like a child looking for a lost friend. It starts by asking: where has spring gone? All around it is lonely and still, with not even a footprint. So it asks anyone who knows to call spring back to live with us. The second stanza says no one knows, so let us ask the oriole. The oriole sings in spring every day, so surely it knows. But it sings and sings and no one understands. Then it turns and rides the wind away over the roses. When the roses bloom, spring is truly gone. The poet asks again and again and finds nothing. His love for spring hides in all this searching, both innocent and sad.
