Background

This ci shows a spring street scene in a rich, busy city: a red-railed bridge, a long straight street full of sweet smells, hanging willows, tall towers and flowers. The second stanza shows rich young men in yellow robes on white horses, riding every day to the houses of singing girls to drink and play. The poem does not say which city it is, or when it was written. Many readers think the poet quietly mocks rich young men who care only for pleasure.

The poet作者

Chen Ke, styled Zigao, called himself the Lay Buddhist of Chicheng. He came from Linhai in today's Zhejiang and lived at the end of the Northern Song and the start of the Southern Song. Sources differ on his dates. His ci use fine words and delicate pictures, often of gardens and of city life. He is often compared with the late Tang poet Wen Tingyun.

The mood意境

The first stanza is like a painting in rich colours: a red bridge, green willows, towers of gold and green, curtain shadows turned red by flowers. Red, green, gold, blue: the colours pile up layer on layer, and the city's splendour appears. In the second stanza people come on stage. Yellow robes and white horses gallop past, heading for the singing houses every day. The line about drunken eyes that meet no one shows their pride; they look down on everybody. The last line has the most flavour: in the scented noon breeze, all that is left is the dust their hooves kick up. After the noise comes only dust. The poet never says a word of blame, yet the mockery is hidden in the picture.
