This page uses the common edition (for example, Deng Guangming's annotated edition of Xin Qiji). It differs from the corpus in a few places. The common text has cháng pà ("always afraid") where the corpus has cháng hèn ("always regret"). It has wú guī lù ("no road back") where the corpus has mí guī lù ("lost the road back"). It has zhū wǎng ("spider's web") where the corpus has a look-alike word meaning "pearl web". It has wēi lán ("high railing") where the corpus has wēi lóu ("tall tower"). Old editions really do differ here. The lyric also has a short preface that the corpus leaves out; see the background.

Background

A short preface says this lyric was written in 1179. That year Xin Qiji was moved from a post in Hubei to one in Hunan, managing taxes and grain. A colleague, Wang Zhengzhi, gave him a farewell feast at the Xiaoshan Pavilion, and Xin wrote this lyric there. Xin had come south more than ten years before. He longed to lead an army to win back the north, but the court kept moving him from post to post and never gave him real power. When the lyric talks of spring slipping away and a beauty envied by others, it is really talking about his own worries. A Song writer, Luo Dajing, recorded that Emperor Xiaozong was said to be displeased when he read it.

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207), also called Jiaxuan, was a great lyric poet of the Southern Song. He was born in the north, which was ruled by the Jin state. In his early twenties he led men to fight the Jin, then came south to the Song. All his life he wanted to win back the lost land, but he was often pushed aside or dismissed. Most of his lyrics are bold and strong. This one is soft and indirect: he hides his anger inside a story of spring and of a lonely beauty.

The mood意境

The first stanza is about spring leaving. The poet asks: how many more storms can it bear? Then he begs spring to stay, saying the grass has already blocked its road home. Spring pays no attention. Only the spider's web under the eaves catches willow fluff all day, as if it too wants to keep spring. This tiny picture is sweet and sad at once. The second stanza turns to the story of Empress Chen. A beauty is envied, and even a fine piece of writing bought with gold cannot carry her feelings to anyone. Then the poet tells the proud ones: don't be glad too soon; Yang Yuhuan and Zhao Feiyan are dust now. At the end he does not name his sorrow. He only says: don't climb the tower, for the setting sun is on the misty willows. The sorrow stays in that evening light. Every line seems to be about spring or a beauty, but really it is about his own pain at having no way to serve his country.
