Background创作背景

This lyric is about missing someone far away. Whom it was for and when it was written are not known. Many of Yan Jidao's lyrics look back on happy meetings and partings, and often speak of dreams, letters and tears. This one does too. It begins with waking and seeing the painted screen, moves on to writing a letter, and then remembers the farewell in a tower by the water.

这首词写对远方一个人的思念，具体写给谁、写于哪一年已经不清楚了。晏几道的很多词都在回忆过去的欢聚和分别，常写梦、写信、写眼泪。这首词也是这样：从醒来时看到画屏写起，写到写信，又回想当年在水边高楼送别的情景。

The poet作者

Yan Jidao was a Northern Song lyric poet, the youngest son of the chief minister Yan Shu; the two are called the Two Yans. His exact dates are unknown, but he lived in the middle and later Northern Song. Born rich, he saw his family decline and never did well in life. His lyrics are mostly about love and parting, sincere in feeling and clear and lovely in words.

晏几道，字叔原，号小山，北宋词人，是宰相晏殊的小儿子，和父亲并称“二晏”。他生卒年不详，大约生活在北宋中后期。他出身富贵，后来家道中落，一生不得意。他的词多写爱情和离别，感情真挚，语言清丽。

The mood意境

The first half begins with a dream. On waking he sees the painted screen. The sky's edge in the picture blends with the immortal isles of his dream, so dream and painting run together. He is awake, but the longing stays. He picks up red paper and writes a letter full of spring sorrow. The second half goes back in time. Long ago they parted in a tower by the water, and he leaned on the railing looking over a thousand miles of Jiangnan. Today the water below still splits and flows away, and he says the tears of that day are in its sound. The tears went into the water, the water keeps flowing, and so the longing has never stopped. It is a fresh idea: it lets us hear a sorrow we cannot see.

上片从梦写起。醒来时，眼前是画屏，画上的天边和梦里的仙岛连在一起，分不清是梦还是画。醒了，思念却还在，他拿起红笺写信，写不完的都是伤春的心事。下片回到从前：当年在水边高楼上分别，他靠着栏杆望着千里江南。如今楼下的流水还在分成两股流走，他说水声里有当年的眼泪。眼泪流进水里，水一直流，思念也就一直没有停过。这个想象很新奇，让看不见的愁变得能听见了。
