How to read it读音

觉jué: Mèng jué means waking from a dream, so this character is read jué, not jiào as in "to sleep".“梦觉”是从梦里醒来，读 jué，不是“睡觉”的 jiào。
那nǎ: Nǎ kān means "how can one bear", so this character is read nǎ.“那堪”是“哪里受得了”的意思，读 nǎ，同“哪”。
伊yī: This character means "she" and is read yī.“伊”是“她”的意思，读 yī。
殢tì: This rare character is read tì and means to cling to, to linger over.殢读 tì，是“纠缠、留恋不放”的意思。
数shǔ: Shǔ hán gēng means counting the cold night watches one by one, so this character is a verb, read shǔ.“数寒更”是一更一更地数着时间，“数”是动词，读 shǔ。
更gēng: In hán gēng this character is a night watch, a unit of night time, so it is read gēng, not gèng as in "even more".“寒更”的“更”是夜里的计时单位，读 gēng，不是“更加”的 gèng。

Background创作背景

Liu Yong did badly in the exams for years and spent much of his life on the road. He wrote many ci about travel far from home and about missing someone. This one shows a traveller in a southern river town. He wakes at midnight after drinking, hears the rain, and thinks of the woman he loves far away. He regrets staying away so long and letting her down. Whether it tells of his own life or of travellers in general, and when and where it was written, can no longer be said for sure.

柳永一生考试不顺，常年在外漂泊，写了很多羁旅和相思的词。羁旅，就是在外乡奔波、寄住。这首词写一个漂泊在南方水乡的人，半夜酒醒，听着雨声，想起远方的心上人，后悔自己一直在外，辜负了她。词里写的是他自己的经历还是一般的游子之情，具体写于哪一年、在什么地方，都已经说不清了。

The poet作者

Liu Yong (about 984 – about 1053), first named Sanbian and also called Qiqing, was the seventh son, so people called him Liu Qi, "Liu the Seventh". He was a Northern Song ci poet from Chong'an in Fujian. He failed the top exam many times and often wrote songs for singing girls in wine houses. His songs spread so far that people said "wherever there is a well, people sing Liu's ci". He passed the exam only late in life and served as an official in the farm-land office, so he was also called Liu Tuntian. He was a master of long, slow ci, and this is one of them.

柳永（约984—约1053），原名三变，字耆卿，排行第七，人称“柳七”，北宋词人，福建崇安人。他多次考进士都没考上，常在歌楼酒馆里为歌女写词，作品传唱很广，有“凡有井水饮处，即能歌柳词”的说法。他晚年才中进士，做过屯田员外郎，所以又叫“柳屯田”。他特别擅长写长调慢词，这首就是一例。

The mood意境

The ci has three parts, like the thoughts of someone who wakes at midnight, coming out layer by layer. The first part is what is around him: a thread of cold wind blows out the lamp, he has sobered up, and he hears only the night rain dripping on the steps. On such a night it is easiest to think of the one you love, and easiest to feel regret: he has wandered too long, broken his vows and turned happiness into sorrow. The second part goes back to the past: her deep inner room, the end of the feast, the warm quilt, how she gave him all her heart and they could not bear to part. The third part returns to now: the night is so long, and yet they are apart. In the end he only hopes to see her again one day and tell her softly that every night by the river he counted the night watches, missing her. There are no big ups and downs here. Like the rain, it is soft and steady, and it makes the longing feel very real.
