How to read it读音

舍shè: Here this character means a house, read shè, not shě.舍，这里指房子，读 shè，不读 shě。
斜xié: Textbooks read this character as xié. In old pronunciation it was xiá, rhyming with jiā and huā.斜，现在课本读 xié。古音读 xiá，和“家、花”押韵。
更gèng: Here this character means "any more", read gèng.更，这里是“再”的意思，读 gèng。

Background创作背景

Yuan Zhen wrote this poem while admiring chrysanthemums. They bloom in late autumn, when most other flowers have faded and the weather grows cold. People of old loved chrysanthemums. Because they bloom late and do not fear the cold, they seemed like people of strong character. We no longer know the year the poem was written.

这首诗是元稹赏菊时写的。菊花在深秋开放，那时别的花大多已经谢了，天气越来越冷。古人很喜欢菊花，觉得它不怕寒冷、开得晚，像有骨气的人。这首诗具体写于哪一年，已经说不清了。

The poet作者

Yuan Zhen (779–831) was a Tang poet. He and Bai Juyi were close friends all their lives. They often sent poems to each other and wrote in a similar style, so people call them "Yuan and Bai". His language is simple and his feelings are sincere.

元稹（779—831），唐代诗人，字微之。他和白居易是一辈子的好朋友，两人常常写诗互相寄送，诗风也相近，被人合称“元白”。他的诗语言浅显，感情真挚。

The mood意境

The first two lines show how much the poet loves chrysanthemums. They bloom all around the house, like the home of Tao Yuanming. He walks round and round the fence, and does not even notice the sun going down. The third line asks and answers its own question: it is not that I favour this flower over all others. The fourth gives the reason: once the chrysanthemums are done, there will be no more flowers this year. The reason is fresh, and makes us see at once why the flower is precious. It is the last flower of the year, blooming just before the cold, so we treasure it all the more.

前两句写诗人有多爱菊花：房子四周开满了菊花，好像陶渊明的家；他绕着篱笆看了一圈又一圈，连太阳快落山都没发觉。第三句自问自答：我并不是在所有花里偏心菊花。第四句说出原因：菊花开完了，这一年就再也没有花可看了。这个理由很新鲜，让人一下子明白了菊花的珍贵。它是一年里最后的花，开在寒冷来临之前，所以格外让人珍惜。
