The corpus has the Song dynasty text, which reads "before my bed I see the moonlight" and "I raise my head and look at the mountain moon". From the Ming and Qing on, the popular version changed these to "bright moonlight" and "look at the bright moon". Today's textbooks use that later version.

Background

This poem is about being far from home and missing it in the quiet of the night. In his twenties Li Bai left his home in Sichuan to travel, and he seldom went back. One account says he wrote it in Yangzhou in 726, but there is no firm proof. The title means "thoughts on a quiet night".

The mood意境

This poem has only twenty characters, none of them hard, yet you remember it after one reading. Late at night the poet cannot sleep. He sees white moonlight in front of his bed and, for a moment, thinks frost has formed on the ground. The word "frost" makes you feel the cold of the night and a little loneliness too. He raises his head and sees the bright moon in the sky. Then he lowers his head and thinks of his faraway home. Two simple movements, up and down, carry his feelings from looking at the moon to missing home. Everyone under heaven can see the same moon, and his family may be looking at it right now. That is why, for over a thousand years, people far from home have thought of this poem when they see the moon.
