The corpus titles the poem "Words of the South". Common anthologies such as "Three Hundred Tang Poems" title it "Song of the South". In line two, the corpus uses an old variant form of the character for "miss"; today the standard form is used.

Background

"Song of the South" is an old folk-song title. Songs under it are often about life in the south, along the Yangtze, and about love. Li Yi used the title to write about a merchant's wife. Trade grew strong in the Tang dynasty, and many merchants spent years away from home while their wives waited. This poem gives one such wife's complaint. We do not know when it was written.

The poet作者

Li Yi (746–829) was a Tang poet who passed the imperial exam in the Dali era. He worked for many years in border armies and is best known for frontier poems, such as "Hearing a Flute at Night on the Wall of Shouxiang". His quatrains were loved and set to music in his own time. This little poem copies the style of folk songs: lively and direct.

The mood意境

This poem sounds like a wife speaking in a temper. It is funny and sad at once. The first two lines give the facts: her husband trades far away, and again and again he promises to come home and does not. Then a strange idea pops up. The tide comes and goes on time every day, and never breaks its word. If she had known, she would have married a young man who plays in the tide! Of course she does not really mean it. She has waited too long, hoping and complaining, so she says something silly. Setting the faithful tide beside the husband's missed dates shows how unreliable he is. The more bluntly she speaks, the more we see how much she misses him.
