Background

This poem is set on a night when autumn has just arrived. We do not know exactly when or where it was written. It has a lovely woman, swallows parting, and flowers fading. It is usually read as using early autumn scenes to express sorrow at parting and at time slipping away. One view links it to Wu Wenying's memories of a woman he once loved, but there is no firm proof.

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 to about 1260), known as Mengchuang, came from Siming, today's Ningbo in Zhejiang. He was a Southern Song writer of song lyrics. He never held a high post. He mostly worked on the staffs of officials, giving advice and writing documents. His lyrics use rich, carefully chosen words, and their pictures jump from one to the next like pieces of brocade sewn together, so they take some thought to read.

The mood意境

This poem is like a set of camera shots that change slowly. First comes the calm water, cold, like a bronze mirror no one has put away. A lovely woman fishes at the edge, a thin moon hangs above, and the pavilion stands in the moonlight. Overnight, autumn has come. In the second half the camera turns to other things. The swallows are about to fly off and will part at dawn. The lotus slowly loses its color, as if spring were leaving once more. When the west wind blows, the wutong leaves by the well are the first to grieve. Swallows, lotus and wutong all say the same thing: the good days are passing. The poet never says he is sad, yet everything he shows carries a faint sorrow.
