This uses the common text. In the corpus the last two lines read "Why go back north? On the Huai I face the autumn hills." The common text reads "Why not go back? On the Huai there are autumn hills." The corpus also writes "thin" in line six with a variant character. Some editions write Liangzhou instead of Liangchuan in the title.

Background

When he was young, Wei Yingwu lived for a time in the Liangzhou area as a guest, and often drank with a friend there. Ten years later the two met again by chance beside the Huai River. The poet was happy and moved, and wrote this poem. Liangchuan means Liangzhou, near today's Hanzhong in Shaanxi. We no longer know the year it was written or who the friend was. It is usually thought he wrote it while serving as an official near the Huai.

The poet作者

Wei Yingwu (about 737 to about 791) was a Tang poet from Chang'an. As a young man he was a guard for Emperor Xuanzong and was rather wild. Later he studied hard and became governor of Suzhou, so people called him Wei of Suzhou. His poems are calm and plain, often about nature and friendship. Later readers placed him beside Wang Wei, Meng Haoran and Liu Zongyuan.

The mood意境

This poem is about old friends meeting again, with sadness mixed into the joy. The first two lines look back. When they were young and far from home, they got drunk every time they met. How happy they were. Lines three and four use drifting clouds and flowing water to show how they wandered apart and how time flew: suddenly ten years were gone. Lines five and six show the present. Their laughter is the same as before, but both have gone gray. That contrast hurts. The last two lines are a question and an answer. Why not go home? Because there are autumn hills by the Huai. The answer sounds light, but it also hides a quiet helplessness, left for the reader to feel.
