Background

Lu Lun wrote a set of six "Frontier Songs" in reply to poems by a Minister Zhang. To write "in reply" means to answer someone's poem with one of your own. "Minister" here stands for a very high office. Who this Zhang was is not agreed. One view says Zhang Yanshang, another says Zhang Jianfeng. The six poems show army life on the border: giving orders, hunting, chasing the enemy, and celebrating. This is the fourth. It shows the feast after a victory.

The poet作者

Lu Lun was a Tang poet, one of the "Ten Talents of the Dali Era". He once worked on a general's staff, giving advice and writing documents, so he saw border army life with his own eyes. That is why his Frontier Songs feel so lively and strong.

The mood意境

The earlier poems in the set are about fighting. This one is about celebrating, and the mood turns loud and happy. The first line paints a wide scene: tents spread across the open land, and tables full of food and wine. The second line shows the border peoples coming to cheer too, so the victory was a great one and everyone is glad. The third line is the most vivid. The soldiers do not even take off their armor. They get drunk and start to dance, bold and carefree. The last line ends with sound. The drums boom like thunder, and the mountains and rivers seem to shake along. As you read, picture yourself by a campfire, hearing the drums and watching soldiers dance in their armor.
