水浴清蟾shuǐ yù qīng chán: shuǐ yù qīng chán: the clear moon is reflected in the water, as if bathing in it. Chán is a toad; legend says one lives in the moon, so it stands for the moon.水浴清蟾：清亮的月亮倒映在水里，好像在水中洗澡。蟾，传说月亮里有蟾蜍，所以用蟾代指月亮。

How to read it读音

更gēng: Here it is read gēng, a watch of the night. People of old split the night into five watches.“更”在这里读 gēng，指夜里的时辰，古人把一夜分成五更。
吹chuī: Here the character means wind, a noun. In old times the noun was read chuì; today it is usually read chuī.“吹”在这里指风，是名词。古时作名词读 chuì，现在一般读 chuī。
数shù: Shù diǎn means a few dots, so the character is read shù.“数点”是几点，“数”读 shù。

Background创作背景

This is a ci about missing a past love. It shows a summer night. The poet leans alone on a railing. He remembers the happy days when she chased fireflies by the well. Now they are a thousand miles apart, and no letters come. We no longer know when it was written or whom he missed. One view links it to his early years in Bianjing, today's Kaifeng in Henan.

这是一首怀念旧日恋人的词。词里写了一个夏夜：词人独自靠着栏杆，想起从前和她在井边扑萤火虫的快乐时光，又想到如今两人相隔千里，音信断绝。这首词写在什么时候、怀念的是谁，已经说不清了。一说是周邦彦早年在汴京（今河南开封）的经历。

The poet作者

Zhou Bangyan (1056–1121), also called Qingzhen Jushi, came from Qiantang, today's Hangzhou. He was a Northern Song ci poet who knew music well. He once ran the court music office, the Dashengfu, and wrote many new tunes. His words are carefully chosen and his structure is tight. He often jumps between past and present, as this ci does.

周邦彦（1056—1121），字美成，号清真居士，钱塘（今浙江杭州）人，北宋词人。他精通音乐，曾主管朝廷的音乐机构大晟府，自己作了不少新曲调。他的词用字讲究，结构细密，常常在过去和现在之间来回切换，这首词就是一个例子。

The mood意境

This ci is like flipping through a photo album. The first page is a summer night: the moon bathes in the water, the cool wind rustles the leaves, and the horses in the street have just gone quiet. The second page is a memory: she leans by the well, laughing as she chases fireflies, so eager that she tears her fan. The third page is now: the poet stands alone until late at night, sighing that time flies and she is far away, beyond even his dreams. The second stanza imagines her side: her hair thins, she grows thin, and she no longer dresses up. Back in front of him, the plum rains come and go, the red flowers fade, and the days slip by. At the end he says his talent and his heart are both worn down. All he can do is look up at a few stars by the Milky Way. The lively start and the lonely end, side by side, make the longing deeper.
