Background

Huaqing Palace stood on Mount Li, where Emperor Xuanzong and Lady Yang often came to enjoy themselves. Records say Lady Yang loved fresh lychees, so the emperor had them carried from the south by relays of fast horses. Many horses and men were worn out on the way. Later the An Lushan Rebellion broke out and the Tang began to decline. Passing the old palace, Du Mu remembered this story and wrote three quatrains. This is the first.

The poet作者

Du Mu (803 to about 852) was a late Tang poet, named with Li Shangyin as the Little Li and Du. He cared about the state of the country and liked to use history to warn people of his own day. He wrote many poems about the past, such as Mooring on the Qinhuai and Red Cliff. This poem uses the past to criticize the present.

The mood意境

This poem is like a few shots in a film. First a long shot: looking back from Chang'an, Mount Li looks like piles of embroidery. Then the camera moves closer: the palace gates open one after another. Then a fast horse rushes up in a cloud of dust, and the consort smiles. Anyone would think it brings urgent war news, but it only brings lychees. The poet does not say one word of blame. He just puts her smile next to the lychees. For one person's smile, so many men and horses raced themselves to death. Readers can feel the bite on their own.
