Background

This is a folk song from the northwest border. The writer left no name; "a man of the western border" just means someone from the western frontier. In the Tianbao era of Emperor Xuanzong, the famous general Geshu Han guarded the northwest and beat the Tibetan Empire many times. The Tibetan Empire was a strong state on the Tibetan Plateau that often raided Tang lands. After Geshu Han took charge, the border grew peaceful, and the local people made up this song to praise him.

The poet作者

"A Man of the Western Border" is not a person's name. It means the common people of the western frontier. The poem was a song passed on by word of mouth, later written down in poetry collections. It is one of the few famous folk songs among Tang poems.

The mood意境

This song is strong from its very first line. The Big Dipper hangs high in the sky, bright and steady. The second line jumps straight to Geshu Han. He keeps watch late at night with his sword, and like the Big Dipper, he stands high over the border and guards it. Putting the man next to the stars makes him seem tall and grand. The last two lines turn to the enemy. They only dare to peek from far away and wish they could graze their horses here, but they never dare cross Lintao. The poem shows no battle at all. Yet from the enemy's fear, we see how mighty Geshu Han is. The words are simple, as if ordinary people sang them off the cuff, so they are very easy to remember.
