Background

Zhang Jiuling was once chief minister to Emperor Xuanzong, but he was pushed out by the scheming minister Li Linfu. In 736 he lost his post, and the next year he was sent down to an office in Jingzhou, in today's Hubei. The twelve poems "Stirred by What I Meet" are usually thought to date from his time there. This one talks about birds to make a point. One reading says the proud kingfishers stand for Li Linfu and others in power at the time, while the lone goose is the poet himself.

The poet作者

Zhang Jiuling (678–740) came from Shaoguan in Guangdong. He was a well-known chief minister under Emperor Xuanzong, honest and willing to speak the truth. He was also a fine poet; he wrote the famous lines about the bright moon rising over the sea. His "Stirred by What I Meet" poems often use plants, birds and beasts to show his own character and his view of court life.

06

The mood意境

This poem is like a little fable. The goose comes from somewhere as wide as the sea and has no interest in little ponds. This shows the poet's big heart: he does not care about small gains. The kingfishers have beautiful feathers and live on the highest, most precious tree. They look grand, but they are in danger: being so easy to see, they draw the hunter's aim. From this the poet draws a lesson. Dress too finely or climb too high, and others will come to hate you. In the end the goose flies off into the far sky, where no hunter's arrow can reach it. The poet has been sent away, but he is not afraid. He feels safer and freer far from the fighting. The tone is calm, yet full of quiet pride.
