Background

The title means: caught in the snow, staying at the home of a master on Furong Mountain. Night fell while the poet was on the road, and heavy snow began. He had to ask for shelter at a house in the mountains. Where Furong Mountain was is not agreed. Some say Hunan, others Fujian or somewhere else. We do not know exactly when the poem was written either. One view says Liu Changqing wrote it while passing through the mountains after being sent away to a lower post.

The poet作者

Liu Changqing, also called Wenfang, was a Tang poet. Sources disagree about when he was born and died. As an official he was twice sent away to lower posts, and his life was not easy. He was especially good at five-character poems and was called "the Great Wall of five-character verse", meaning his poems in that form were as strong and grand as the Great Wall. His poems often show cold, quiet scenes, and this one is a famous example.

The mood意境

This poem has only twenty characters, but it plays like a short film. The first line is a wide shot: night falls and the far mountains grow dark. The second line moves closer: a small thatched hut in the cold wind, chilly and poor. These two lines are what we see, and they are quiet. The third line suddenly brings a sound: a dog barks by the gate. The fourth line tells us why: someone has come home late at night through the wind and snow. Who is this person coming home? Most readers think it is the master of the house. Some say it is the poet himself. Either way, on a dark, cold, snowy night, hearing a dog and seeing someone come home warms the heart. The cold scene and the warm feeling side by side make the poem very moving.
