Background

This lyric was written around the Qingming Festival. In it Wu Wenying remembers a woman he had parted from. It is usually said that he had a concubine in Suzhou who later left him, and that in Hangzhou he loved another woman who later died. Views differ on which one this lyric remembers; one view says it is the woman from Suzhou, and the west garden is where the two used to go. The year it was written is not known.

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 to about 1260), also called Mengchuang, was a lyric poet of the Southern Song. He never held a high office, and often worked as an adviser in other men's households. He lived for a long time around Suzhou and Hangzhou. His lyrics use rich, finely carved words, and many readers find them hard. This one is plainer and more natural, and is one of his easiest famous pieces to read.

The mood意境

Qingming is already a sad day, and now there is wind and rain too. The poet writes a piece for burying flowers, but really he is burying his own sorrow. The road in front of the tower is where the two parted. Willow strands hang down, and each one is like a feeling he cannot let go. The second half is the most moving. He sweeps the garden every day, as if she might come back. Bees keep darting at the swing ropes, because her scent is still on them. It is a delicate idea: she has been gone so long, yet even the bees remember her. The last line says moss has grown on the steps in one night, because she never walks there any more. Moss in one night is an exaggeration, but it makes us feel at once how long the waiting has been.
