Background

Zhang Ji was a mid-Tang poet. It is usually said that after the An Lushan Rebellion, a great revolt that began in 755, many northerners fled south of the Yangtze for safety, and Zhang Ji came to Suzhou too. One autumn night his boat was moored at Maple Bridge outside the city. Unable to sleep, he heard the bell of Hanshan Temple and wrote this poem. The exact year is not certain.

The poet作者

Zhang Ji came from Xiangzhou, today's Xiangyang in Hubei, and passed the highest imperial examination in the Tianbao years of Emperor Xuanzong. Few of his poems survive, and little is known of his life. But this one poem has kept his name alive for more than a thousand years, and it made Hanshan Temple famous.

The mood意境

This poem is about an autumn night without sleep. The first line holds three things: the moon has set, so it is darker; crows caw, so the night feels quieter; frost fills the air, so the traveller feels colder. In the second line the poet lies in his boat, looking at the riverside maples and the little lights of the fishing boats, his heart full of sorrow. Why is he sad? The poem does not say. Maybe he misses home, maybe he worries about the troubled times. The last two lines move from what he sees to what he hears. At midnight the bell of Hanshan Temple rings, stroke by stroke, and reaches his boat. The quieter the night, the clearer the bell; the clearer the bell, the lonelier he feels. That bell has kept ringing for more than a thousand years. Many people go to Suzhou just to hear the bell of Hanshan Temple.
