Background

This lyric describes a spring outing at West Lake in Hangzhou at Qingming, mixed with longing for a woman. It is generally thought to recall how Wu Wenying first met his sweetheart by West Lake. He glimpsed her back through the flowers; later they had secret meetings, but in the end they parted. Now it is Qingming again, he visits the lake once more, and the old love floods back. The exact year it was written is no longer known.

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 to about 1260), courtesy name Junte, also called Mengchuang, came from Siming, today's Ningbo in Zhejiang. He was a Southern Song ci poet. He never held high office and often lived as a guest of officials around Suzhou and Hangzhou. His lyrics use rich words and jump from image to image like a dream, so they are hard to follow. "San fan" in the tune name means a tune made by joining parts of several melodies.

06

The mood意境

The first stanza is like a scroll painting of a spring outing at West Lake. Red flowers, like shy girls, are blown by the evening wind onto the grass. The causeways split the lake like a swallow's tail, boats glide like gulls, and fine horses rest beneath the clouds. There are a thousand willow threads, and the path goes deeper, as if into fairyland. Just then, through the flowers, he sees her from behind. It is only a glimpse of her back, yet it sets his heart turning over and over. The second stanza tells what came after. He hesitates and feels lost, like Cui Hu who could never find the girl under the peach blossoms again. Their meetings cannot be counted on, and he grows thin with longing. Then the poem turns to tomorrow: after Qingming the whole lake will be cold wind and rain. The ending shows only hills and water at dusk. The waves are pale and leave no trace, just like that love. Wu Wenying's lyrics are often dreamlike, with one picture jumping to the next. You do not need to understand every line. Just follow the pictures and feel the mood, lovely and sad at once.
