The corpus credits this poem to Li Pin, with "cut off" written with a different character in line one and "through the year" instead of "through the winter" in line two. Most common anthologies today credit it to Song Zhiwen and use "through the winter" in line two.

Background

Two names are given for the author: Song Zhiwen or Li Pin. The Complete Tang Poems lists it under both men, and Three Hundred Tang Poems gives it to Li Pin, but the common view today is Song Zhiwen. In that account, under Emperor Zhongzong, Song Zhiwen was sent away as punishment to Longzhou, near today's Luoding in Guangdong. It lay south of the Five Ridges, far from home, and he lost all contact with his family. Later he secretly fled back north, and he wrote this poem while crossing the Han River, a large branch of the Yangtze.

The poet作者

Song Zhiwen was an early Tang poet, as famous as Shen Quanqi; the two were called "Shen and Song". They cared a lot about the strict rules of verse and helped shape the Tang regulated poem. Song Zhiwen was often criticized as a person. He was sent away twice for siding with powerful men at court. This poem shows his feelings on the road back from exile.

The mood意境

The first two lines show the pain of being away. He is in the far south, with no news from home, while a winter and a spring slip by. You would expect him to be happy as he nears home, and eager to ask about his family. But the last two lines turn the other way. The closer he gets, the more afraid he is, and he does not even dare to ask. Why? After so long with no news, has something bad happened at home? He fears bad news, so he would rather not ask. Many people who have been away a long time know this mix of hope and fear. The line "the closer I get to home, the more afraid I feel" says it so exactly that it has been remembered for over a thousand years.
