Background

Dingwei in the title is the year 1187. That winter, Jiang Kui travelled from Huzhou to Suzhou to visit the poet Fan Chengda. On the way he passed Wusong, by the Wusong River near today's Wujiang in Suzhou, Jiangsu. The Tang poet Lu Guimeng had once lived there as a hermit. Looking at the winter lake and hills, Jiang Kui thought of Lu Guimeng, whom he admired, and wrote this lyric.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155 to about 1221), also called the White Stone Taoist, was a Southern Song lyric poet and a musician who wrote his own tunes. He never held office, lived on help from friends, and wandered from place to place. His lyrics are cool and airy, like pale ink paintings. He envied the free hermit life of Lu Guimeng by the lakes and rivers.

The mood意境

The first stanza paints the scene. The geese fly freely off with the clouds, and the poet envies them for having no cares. Quietly, he tells us his own heart is heavy. A few hills stand cold and bleak, as if discussing whether to rain, so even the hills have feelings. The word for "talking it over" is especially clever. It brings the gloomy winter evening sky to life. The second stanza turns to his heart. He wishes he could live here with Lu Guimeng, but that poet is long gone. Only the railing and a few bare willows are left, swaying in the wind. The whole lyric is cold and quiet, full of a wanderer's loneliness and longing for the past.
