In the corpus, line 2 names the Yanmen Pass. Textbooks and common editions name the Yumen (Jade Gate) Pass, which is in the northwest and fits better with Qinghai and Loulan.

Background

Joining the Army is an old folk-song title used for poems about soldiers and war. Wang Changling wrote seven poems under it, and this is the fourth. He is usually thought to have traveled to the northwest frontier when young. These poems show the life and feelings of the soldiers there. Sources differ on the exact year.

The mood意境

The first two lines paint a huge, empty frontier. Long clouds hang over Qinghai Lake, the snowy mountains turn dark, and a lonely fort faces the far Jade Gate. It is cold and far from home, and it feels vast and sad. The third line sums up how hard the war is: endless battles in the yellow sand, so many that the armor has worn through. But the last line is not a sigh. It is a vow: until we beat the enemy, we will not go home. The harder the first lines are, the stronger the vow sounds. We can picture tired but tough soldiers standing in the wind and sand, refusing to step back.
