Background

This poem is about the feeling of waking up on a spring morning. It is usually thought to come from the years when Meng Haoran lived quietly near his home town of Xiangyang. Which year it was can no longer be told. Meng spent most of his life in the countryside and often wrote about the hills, streams and daily life around him. This poem starts from a very ordinary morning.

The mood意境

The poet sleeps until morning and is woken by birds outside the window. First comes the cheerful part: birds are singing everywhere, and spring is lovely. Then he remembers the wind and rain in the night, and a thought stirs: so many flowers, how many were knocked down? There is joy in spring here, and also a little sadness at seeing it slip away. The poem has no hard words. It never says "I love spring." It only gives the sounds he hears and one question in his mind. Yet it makes us feel we are lying in bed too, hearing the birds and picturing petals all over the ground.
