Background

In 755, An Lushan and Shi Siming rose against the Tang. This is called the An Lushan Rebellion. The next year the rebels took Chang'an. Du Fu left his family in Fuzhou and set off to join the new emperor, Suzong. On the way he was caught by the rebels and taken back to Chang'an. In the spring of 757 he was trapped in the city. He saw it in ruins and had no news of his family, so he wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770), courtesy name Zimei, was a great Tang poet, often called the Sage of Poetry. He lived through the great war that turned the Tang from strong to weak. His poems tell of the people's suffering and the country's danger, so they are also called a history in verse.

The mood意境

The opening sets two words against each other: the country is broken, yet the hills and rivers remain. Spring has come, yet the city holds only wild grass and trees, and no people. Flowers are lovely and birdsong is sweet, but the poet is so sad that flowers bring tears and birds make his heart start. Another reading says the flowers and birds themselves seem to weep and tremble. "A letter from home is worth ten thousand in gold" speaks for everyone caught in war. At the end the poet does not say he weeps. He only scratches his head, his white hair too thin to hold a pin. And we see an old man worried for his country and his family.
