The corpus has a different character for hui (light) in line one; most common editions use the one for sunlight. Both mean the evening glow. In line three the corpus uses an old variant form of shu (sparse); the meaning is the same.

Background

Secretary Guo was a court secretary surnamed Guo; his full name is no longer known. Such secretaries worked in the Chancellery and checked the emperor's orders. Guo first sent Wang Wei a poem, and Wang Wei wrote this one in reply. The word chou in the title means to answer a poem with a poem. It shows the palace on a spring evening, praises Guo's hard work, and ends by saying the poet is old and wants to resign. It is usually thought to have been written in Wang Wei's later years while he served at court, but the year is not known.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (701? to 761) was a great Tang poet and painter, called the Buddha of Poetry. He rose to be a high minister, yet in his heart he always longed for a quiet life in the hills. He was a Buddhist, and in his later years he often stayed at his country house at Wangchuan. The wish to resign at the end of this poem shows exactly that feeling.

The mood意境

The first two lines are a picture of a spring evening. The gates and halls glow in the sunset, peach and plum trees cast shade, and willow catkins drift. The next two lines show how quiet the palace is. The bell rings now and then, birds sing, and everyone has gone. This quiet also praises Guo: he is honest and careful, so his office has no noise or fuss. Lines five and six show Guo's busy day: into the golden hall in the morning, carrying the emperor's orders in the evening, dignified and hardworking. The last two lines are Wang Wei's own words from the heart: I would like to follow you, but I am old, so I will leave office because of illness. He says it politely, but you can feel he is tired of court life, and his heart has already flown to the hills.
