Background

Choubi Post Station was a roadside station north of today's Guangyuan in Sichuan. Legend says Zhuge Liang camped here and made his war plans while leading armies north, so it was named the Station of Planning with the Brush. In his later years Li Shangyin worked as an aide in Zizhou, in Sichuan. He is generally thought to have passed this station on a journey between Sichuan and Chang'an. Remembering Zhuge Liang's life, he wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813–about 858) was a late Tang poet. He and Du Mu are called the Little Li and Du. His poems use many old stories and hint at their meaning rather than saying it outright. All his life he was caught in fights between court factions and never got ahead. So when he writes of Zhuge Liang's talent that could not win, he is also sighing about himself.

The mood意境

The opening is almost magical. Hundreds of years have passed, yet the apes and birds still fear Zhuge Liang's orders, and the wind and clouds still guard his camp. This shows how strict his army was and how long his fame has lasted. Lines three and four suddenly turn. However well he planned, the last ruler of Shu still surrendered in the end. The words for "in vain" and "in the end" make the regret weigh heavy. Lines five and six give the reason. Zhuge Liang had talent enough, but Guan Yu and Zhang Fei died early, and one man alone could not hold everything up. The last two lines come back to the poet. He once visited the shrine in Chengdu and wrote a poem there, but the regret never ends. The poem first lifts the hero high, then lets him fall, and the praise is full of sighs.
