Background

"On the Pond" is a set of two poems, and this is the second. It is taught in primary school. It is usually thought to come from Bai Juyi's later years, when he lived in Luoyang. His official post then was light, and he often walked by the pond at home and enjoyed the view. In summer, when the lotus bloomed, he saw a child secretly pushing a boat out to pick lotus flowers. He found it charming and turned this little event into a poem.

The poet作者

Bai Juyi (772–846), also called Letian, was a great Tang poet. He wanted his poems to be plain and easy to understand. Legend says he read each new poem to an old woman who could not read, and only kept it if she understood. In his later years he lived in Luoyang and wrote many relaxed little poems. "On the Pond" is one of them, with words as simple as talking.

The mood意境

This poem is like a funny little cartoon. A child pushes a small boat out to pick white lotus flowers in secret. The words "picked in secret" tell us he went without the grown-ups knowing. He must feel a bit nervous and a bit proud. But he is only a child. He thinks only of the flowers and never thinks of hiding himself. Where the boat passes, the duckweed parts and leaves a clear trail on the water, as if to tell everyone, "Someone was here!" The poet does not scold him. He watches it all with a smile. An innocent child, white lotus and green duckweed make a happy summer picture.
