Background

The Battle of Red Cliff took place in 208. Sun Quan and Liu Bei joined forces and, at Red Cliff on the Yangtze, defeated Cao Cao's huge army with fire. After that the land was split into three. While Du Mu was prefect of Huangzhou, today's Huanggang in Hubei (842–844), he visited a cliff there also called Red Cliff, and the poem is usually dated to that time. However, the real battlefield is generally thought to be elsewhere, around today's Chibi City in Hubei; the one at Huangzhou only shares the name.

The poet作者

Du Mu (803–852) was a poet of the late Tang, from the capital area, today's Xi'an. He read many books on warfare and even wrote notes on "The Art of War" by Sunzi, so he had his own views about battles. When he wrote about history, he often did not repeat the usual opinion but offered a new idea.

The mood意境

The poet starts from a small object: a broken halberd dug out of the sand. After cleaning it, he sees it was left from the Battle of Red Cliff. One old weapon carries us back hundreds of years to that great battle. The last two lines are the poet's bold idea. Zhou Yu won because the east wind happened to blow. Without that wind, Wu would have lost, and even the Qiao sisters would have been taken by Cao Cao and locked in his Bronze Sparrow Terrace. Instead of saying plainly that the state would fall, the poet shows it through the fate of two beautiful women, which is vivid and witty. It also suggests that success and failure in history sometimes depend on luck. As you read, ask yourself: can a single wind change history?
