Background

Cui Hao wrote four Songs of Changgan, and this is the first. It is also titled Ballad of Changgan. Changgan is a place in today's Nanjing, Jiangsu, near the Yangtze River. Songs of Changgan were first folk songs from that area. In this poem two boats meet on the river, and a young woman on one boat calls out to a person on the other. The second song in the set is the reply.

The poet作者

Cui Hao (died 754) was a Tang poet from Bianzhou, today's Kaifeng in Henan. His most famous poem is Yellow Crane Tower. Legend says even Li Bai felt he could not write a better one. This set of Songs of Changgan follows folk songs. The language is plain and natural, like everyday talk.

05

The mood意境

The poem is like a conversation, but only one person speaks. A young woman on the river hears a familiar accent from the other boat and cannot help stopping to ask: where is your home? Before the other can answer, she tells about herself: I live at Hengtang. Only then does she say why she asks: maybe we are from the same place. The words come quick and direct, and an open, warm young woman stands before us. Anyone who has heard their home accent far from home knows that warm surprise.
